Property Tax Relief in Tucker Georgia

What I’ll Do to Start Reducing Your Property Tax Bill

Tucker families deserve meaningful property tax relief.

As Mayor, I will take clear, strategic steps to reduce the financial pressure on homeowners in Tucker, Georgia, while keeping our city on strong fiscal footing.

We’ve already taken the first step: Tucker is now enrolled in Georgia’s new floating homestead exemption under HB 581. This means that for eligible homeowners, the taxable value of your home can only increase at the rate of inflation, not at the pace of skyrocketing market values. This creates long-term stability in your tax bill and shields you from sudden spikes caused by rising home prices.

But we can and must do more.

1. Confirm and Strengthen Tucker’s Participation in HB 581

Although Tucker’s inclusion in HB 581 happened automatically by not opting out, I will work with Council to affirm our participation and make it permanent. This ensures that past silence on the issue does not risk our ability to use key tax relief tools like FLOST tax credits.

As Mayor, I’ll support a clear public resolution affirming Tucker’s commitment to:

Keeping the floating exemption in place, and align local policies with HB 581 to protect homeowners and secure future savings.

This step will remove any uncertainty, protect homeowners long-term, and allow us to move forward confidently with additional relief options.

2. Implement the Floating Sales Tax (FLOST) for Direct Tax Credits

Because Tucker and DeKalb County both participate in HB 581, we’re eligible to adopt a Floating Local Option Sales Tax (FLOST), a dedicated 1% sales tax that can only be used to reduce property tax bills. If approved, this tool would show up as a line-item credit on your property tax bill, delivering $200–$500 or more per year in savings, depending on collections.

As Mayor, I will:

Coordinate with DeKalb County to negotiate the required Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA),

Support placing FLOST on the ballot for voter approval,

Ensure that all collected revenue is publicly tracked and transparently returned to homeowners.

How the FLOST Process Works:

For the City:

Maintain participation in the HB 581 exemption (and affirm it through resolution).

Collaborate with DeKalb County to draft and approve the Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA).

Pass a resolution to place FLOST on the ballot.

Lead a public education campaign so voters understand what FLOST is and how it benefits them.

For the Community:

Learn how FLOST works and how it would reduce your property taxes.

Ask questions, attend community meetings, and review sample tax bill credits.

Vote in the FLOST referendum to approve this dedicated funding for property tax relief.

3. Launch a Tucker Local Tax Relief Program

I will propose a local tax relief program to assist seniors, long-time homeowners, and residents on fixed incomes who may still struggle even with exemptions in place. By leveraging city reserves, state or federal grants, and targeted budget planning, this fund will provide direct support to the households who need it most so they can stay in their homes and neighborhoods.

4. Strengthen Oversight and Transparency

I’ll make it easy to see where every dollar is going. That includes:

A public-facing budget dashboard, so you can track how city funds are used.

Clear reporting on property tax relief and savings, including the impact of the floating exemption and any future FLOST tax credits.

Council meeting updates that show non-conforming costs, project overruns, and budget changes in plain language.

What You Can Expect

Initiative Estimated Benefit

Floating Exemption (HB 581) Capped taxable value growth at inflation

FLOST (if approved by voters) $200–$500+ annual tax credit

Local Tax Relief Program Tailored assistance for fixed-income households

This is your home, your investment, and your future, and I’m ready to bring the leadership, clarity, and collaboration it takes to make real tax relief a reality in Tucker.
